Be More | August

Goodbye, August, you were awesome!
We continued in our endeavour to be more.
There was European travel.  Plenty of European travel.
There were Mummies and Blood Swept Lands.
There was the completion of the Summer Photography Scavenger Hunt.
There were postcards.  Oh, so many sent and received.
There were cousins to stay for a long weekend.
There was ice and buckets.
And oh, so much more.
August has whizzed by.
Hello, September and all that you can offer.

Do you have a word or phrase for 2014 that you want to keep at the forefront of your mind during your daily life?

When All Else Fails ...

When the back-to-school shopping is done.
When the Holiday Diary is looking satisfactorily full.
When you have exhausted sensible ideas for holiday adventures.
When they are hanging about and getting in the way.
Send them to the pub in the search of live football.
Never fails.

I Am Invictus

You may recall back in 2012 that we tried our hardest to obtain tickets to the London Summer Olympics.
We were unsuccessful at every turn.
And suffered numerous family members and friends turning up to park on our drive before flaunting their tickets as they headed East.
In a little over a fortnight, we are bound for the Olympic Park for the Invictus Games and in particular, the wheelchair basketball..  Everyone's favourite Royal, Prince Harry is the driving force behind the Games and is promoting them at every opportunity.
However, should when I bump into him at the Olympic Park, I'll be taking issue with branded clothing available.  I don't usually buy t-shirts associated with a particular event.  I find it all a bit look-where-I-was-and-you-weren't, but as we actively support Forces' Charities all year round, I made a small exception.
Round neck t-shirt in black?  On a 7-year-old, maybe.
The Boy Child is going to look fabulous in this.
On a woman in her mid-40s?  Not so much.
Thankfully, another charity which supports wounded military men and woman has a more suitable alternative.
And now that I have mine, The Brainy One is eyeing up the men's version.
You can learn more about the Games here.
You can see and hear numerous celebrities reciting the poem Invictus below.

Sharing a Cuppa

Hi, hi, c'mon on in!
How are you?  You've called at a perfect time, as the boys are on a Boys Own Adventure to Oxford for the day and we have the space to sit and chat.  It's a little Autumnal outside today, isn't it?  I do hope that summer isn't over just yet.
What have I been doing while they are out?
I have ignored the plaintive calls coming from the depths of the ironing basket and I have scrapbooked.
All.  Afternoon.
And it's been heavenly, I can tell you.  Apart from trying to keep up with Project Life, I haven't done any scrapbooking during the summer holidays and I have missed it.  I've made a title page for the album about our summer travels and a double spread about visiting the Louvre.  And I suspect I shall start on another page when you have gone.
How has your summer been?  Did you manage to get away at all?  School starts again next Wednesday and I would say that The Boy Child is ready to go back.  I know that I am.  Year 3.  Gulp.
We're hopeful that he will transition into a new routine smoothly.  His new teacher has first hand experience of teaching children with Autism and we have armed him with simple knowledge of his condition.  Yep, we had The Talk and it went okay.  I'll go into more detail another time.
Now, how about a top-up and you can tell me what you've been upto ...

Sharing a Cuppa is brought to you in association with Abi's invitation to sit and have a cup of tea.

Photography Scavenger Hunt | The Definitive List: 15-21

Thanks to my recent travels, I have completed this year's Photography Scavenger Hunt list and no substitutions were required.
In some cases I was able to find duplicates.
Some images have been already posted here and some have been shared on facebook. But what follows is the definitive list for 2014.

Numbers 15-21:
#15: A juggler.  This was a late addition to the list and found in Covent Garden.
#16: A sign in a language other than English.  I had this early on (and it was rather a dull one, at that), so I am going with the sign we saw in the courtyard of the Louvre.
#17: A lamp post.  It is what it is.
#18: A waterfall. I've gone with The Boy Child emptying his paddling pool.
#19: A public garden.  This was another I found early on, but again, I've gone with an image from Paris ~ the Tuileries Gardens, as seen from the ferris wheel.
#20: A bus (not a car, truck, lorry, camper or RV) with a picture painted on the side.
#21: A photograph of you with something representing the season (recognising that the season will be Winter for our friends in the Southern Hemisphere).  The Boy Child's suncream is a perfect example of summer.
How are you getting on with your list?
Thanks, Rinda, for a fun list!

That Kind Of Day

It was a day for staying close to home.
It was a day for wearing my boyfriend jeans after weeks of running around London in shorts.  I like that this image gives a true indication of the state of my kitchen: two plastic bags full of recycling and a full ironing basket on the floor.  Plus the pooch.
And that you can see my suntanned feet.
It was a day for cooking up a family favourite.
It was a day for reading quietly.
It was a day for writing in the much loathed Holiday Diary.
It was a day for writing in Project Life and thinking about how I can help my cousin get started on her own album.
It was a day for printing off a stack of photos to send to family members who have put in requests for copies.
It was a day for running out of spare printer cartridges.

It was a day that was needed.
Summer 500: 251.  With a little over a week to go before school restarts, it's perfectly obvious that I am not going to reach my target of 500 photos of summer onto the blog.
But I've had fun trying.

The Sound of Silence

They're gone.
Those four lovely cousins of mine.
But not before we went out for brunch.
And the pre-requisite Bank Holiday walk in the rain.
The house has been quiet since early afternoon.
And I'm not sure I like it.

Ice Bucket Challenge

If you are a user of Facebook, you will probably have seen numerous videos of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge doing the rounds.
Three of our cousins were filmed completing their challenges in our back garden today.
The Boy Child announced that he wanted to take part as well ...

Totally bonkers.
But an extremely worthwhile cause will benefit, so it's all good.

Through Fresh Eyes | Photo Heavy

Sometimes it's good to revisit old haunts with fresh sets of eyes.
From the park to the Tower and everywhere in between.

I know that I've said it before, but cousins are brilliant.
We have a long shared history.
She and I have history that is unique to just the two of us.
We pick up where we've left off.
We laugh together.
We cry together.
We mourn our losses together.
We celebrate our happy times together.
We see our sons creating the links that bind the next generation.
Cousins are brilliant.

Five on Friday

1) a day for getting out and about.
 2) a day for visiting a lovely friend.
 3) a day for attempting to learn new skills.
 4) a day for trying to get the cousins to look the same way.
 5) a day for almost achieving three sets of eyes open and looking towards the camera.
A pretty good day.

Photography Scavenger Hunt | The Definitive List:8-14

Thanks to my recent travels, I have completed this year's Photography Scavenger Hunt list and no substitutions were required.
In some cases I was able to find duplicates.
Some images have been already posted here and some have been shared on facebook. But what follows is the definitive list for 2014.

Numbers 8-14:
#8: A tattoo on a person.  I was able to get this early on when a friend posed for me.
#9: A bakery.  I was certain I would find this in Paris.  I found it in Denmark.
#10: A photo bomb (someone found lurking in the background of photo; the lurker may have intended to disrupt the picture or may be doing it unintentionally, but the background lurker is a surprise to the photographer).  I had this on 1 June, but then The Boy Child was photobombed by a complete stranger.
#11: A horn. Another early find; spotted on The Boy Child's teacher's bike.
#12: A mascot.  Probably the weakest find on the list.   "Pride": Team GB's mascot from the London Olympics in 2012.
#13: A sunrise.  I was certain that I would get this in Denmark and I did.  The image was taken at 6.10am on the island of Fanø.
#14: A parade.  This was another I found early, thanks to Trooping of the Colour.
How does your list look?
